Turks and Caicos beach and reef from above

The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos sit side by side at the entrance to the Caribbean, each offering a distinct luxury escape. Together they form one of the most popular corridors for private aviation out of South Florida. This guide covers everything you need to know about chartering private to both destinations, including routes, airports, resorts, and what to expect on arrival.

The Florida to Caribbean Corridor

South Florida serves as the primary gateway for private aviation to The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos. The three main departure airports are Fort Lauderdale Executive (KFLL), Miami Opa Locka Executive (KOPF), and Palm Beach International (KPBI). All three offer excellent FBO services, fast customs processing, and routes to every major Caribbean destination.

Flight times vary by destination. Fort Lauderdale to Nassau is the shortest at approximately 55 minutes. Miami to Providenciales takes about 90 minutes. Most Caribbean flights from South Florida are under two hours, making same day round trip travel entirely realistic.

Destination Airports in The Bahamas

The Bahamas has multiple international airports that accept private jets. Choosing the right one depends on which island you are visiting.

Lynden Pindling International (MYNN) in Nassau is the largest and most capable. It handles heavy jets, has 24 hour operations, and is the primary entry point for travelers heading to Paradise Island, Cable Beach, or Albany. Customs and immigration are efficient for private jet passengers.

Exuma International (MYEF) in George Town serves all of the Exuma Cays. It handles midsize and light jets comfortably. Expect a more relaxed arrival experience. Ground transportation to the main hotels and the Exuma Cays marina is straightforward.

North Eleuthera (MYEH) is the gateway to Harbour Island. The airport is small, handling light and midsize jets. After landing, travelers take a short taxi ride to the water taxi dock, then a 10 minute boat ride to Harbour Island itself.

Marsh Harbour (MYAM) in the Abacos serves the sailing and boating community. Good for light and midsize jets.

Leonard M. Thompson International (MYAT) at Treasure Cay is another Abacos option, primarily for visitors to Treasure Cay Resort or the nearby islands.

Destination Airports in Turks and Caicos

Providenciales International (MBPV) is the primary airport in Turks and Caicos and the entry point for nearly all visitors. It handles all aircraft types including heavy jets. The FBO experience is polished, and customs processing is efficient for private arrivals.

From Providenciales airport, you are approximately 20 minutes from Grace Bay Beach and the primary resort zone. Ground transportation is well organized. For travelers heading to the smaller Turks and Caicos islands (Grand Turk, Salt Cay, or North Caicos), domestic connecting charter is readily available.

Aircraft Recommendations by Route

Fort Lauderdale or Miami to Nassau: A light jet like the Citation CJ3 or Phenom 300 is ideal. Under 60 minutes flight time, seats 6 to 8 passengers, and cost effective.

Any South Florida departure to Exuma or Harbour Island: Light jet works, but a midsize like the Hawker 800XP adds comfort on the longer flight.

Any South Florida departure to Providenciales: Midsize jet is the minimum recommendation given the 90 minute plus flight time. Heavy jets like the Challenger 605 provide the most comfortable experience.

Multi stop Caribbean tours: Midsize jets with longer range enable efficient island hopping without refueling.

Luxury Resort Connections

Private aviation gives you seamless access to the region's top resorts without the commercial airline bottleneck.

In The Bahamas: Atlantis Paradise Island, Baha Mar, Rosewood Baha Mar, The Ocean Club, Albany, Sandals Royal Bahamian, and The Cove at Atlantis all accommodate private jet travelers with preferred transfer services from the FBO. Some resorts like Albany have private jet member services that extend to charter guests.

On Harbour Island: The Dunmore, Pink Sands Resort, Rock House, and Coral Sands all arrange transfers from North Eleuthera including the water taxi.

In Exuma: Grand Isle Resort, Fowl Cay Resort, and Staniel Cay Yacht Club are the primary destinations. Most include helicopter or boat transfers from the airport as part of the stay.

In Turks and Caicos: Amanyara, Rock House, Grace Bay Club, The Shore Club, Como Parrot Cay (on private Parrot Cay via connecting transfer), and Beach Enclave all welcome private jet arrivals with dedicated transfer services.

Customs and Immigration for Private Arrivals

Both The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos have streamlined customs and immigration for private jet passengers. Expect the process to take 5 to 15 minutes at most private terminals. You will need valid passports for all passengers, a completed immigration form (which your crew can provide and help complete), and proof of departure arrangements.

Private jets typically file a general declaration (GenDec) in advance that pre notifies customs of your arrival. This dramatically speeds up processing compared to commercial flights.

Important Note

Turks and Caicos is a British Overseas Territory, not part of The Bahamas. If you are traveling to both destinations, you will clear customs separately in each. Your aviation team coordinates this in advance.

Seasonal Considerations

Both destinations follow the same general weather pattern. Peak season runs mid November through April with ideal weather and peak pricing. Shoulder seasons in May, June, and early November often deliver the best value. Hurricane season is June through November with highest risk August through October.

Demand for private aviation spikes during Christmas, New Year, Presidents Day weekend, spring break, and Easter. Book at least 4 to 6 weeks in advance for peak periods. Empty leg availability is highest during off peak weeks and shoulder season.

Why Charter Over Commercial

Commercial options to both destinations have improved, but private aviation still wins on several fronts. Direct access to smaller airports like Exuma and North Eleuthera without connection through Nassau. No checked bag limits or security theater. Customs handled in minutes rather than an hour or more. Your schedule, not the airline's. The ability to bring pets, surfboards, diving gear, or oversized luggage without fee or hassle.

For groups of four or more, the per person cost of private charter often comes within range of commercial first class tickets while delivering a dramatically better experience.
