Atmosphere and Pace

Nassau is busy. It is a capital city with a population of 275,000 (roughly half the total Bahamas population), an active cruise port (up to 30,000 cruise passengers can be in port on peak days), commercial districts, business services, and nightlife. If you want energy, variety, and always something happening, Nassau delivers.

Exuma is spread out and island focused. George Town has a few hundred residents. Activity centers on boats, water, and natural exploration. Evenings are quiet. If you want days full of adventure and evenings under the stars, Exuma delivers.

Harbour Island is intimate and slow. The island is two miles long with about 1,500 residents. Golf carts are the primary transportation. Dunmore Town has a handful of streets and small businesses. If you want quiet, beauty, and a place where your schedule belongs to you, Harbour Island delivers.

Accommodation Options

Nassau has the widest range of accommodation. Atlantis (2,300 rooms) and Baha Mar (2,300 rooms) are mega resorts with full amenity scope. Rosewood Baha Mar, The Ocean Club, and other luxury properties offer premium experiences. Boutique options include The Royal at Atlantis and various smaller hotels. Private homes and villas are available but less common than on the outer islands.

Exuma has fewer but more distinctive options. Grand Isle Resort is the largest luxury option with approximately 80 villas. Fowl Cay Resort (a private island resort) accommodates about 16 guests in 6 villas. Staniel Cay Yacht Club offers rustic luxury with small bungalows. Many travelers rent private villas or the famous private island properties.

Harbour Island is all about boutique. The Dunmore is the grande dame with 14 cottages. Pink Sands Resort has about 25 cottages. Rock House and Coral Sands are smaller still. Private villa rentals are popular and range from cottages to estate properties. The entire island probably has fewer than 200 total guest rooms.

Beach Experience

Nassau's beaches are beautiful but often crowded. Cable Beach and Paradise Island beaches are groomed and resort backed. Most hotels have their own beach access. Quality is good but not the defining feature.

Exuma's beaches are extraordinary but require some travel. The Tropic of Cancer Beach on Little Exuma and the beaches on the Exuma Cays are among the most beautiful in the world. Most require boat access, which becomes part of the adventure.

Harbour Island's pink sand beach runs the entire eastern side of the island. It is three miles long, almost never crowded, and genuinely pink due to crushed coral. This is arguably the most beautiful beach experience of the three destinations for its combination of beauty and privacy.

Dining

Nassau has the widest dining selection. Multiple Michelin quality options (Fish by José Andrés at Baha Mar, Nobu at Atlantis, numerous independent restaurants in downtown Nassau). Casual dining from Graycliff to the Fish Fry at Arawak Cay. If food variety matters, Nassau wins.

Exuma has limited but memorable options. Santana's Grill Pit on Little Exuma for lobster. Chat and Chill on Stocking Island for beach dining. Grand Isle Resort's restaurants for fine dining. Most resorts include meal plans given the limited independent dining options.

Harbour Island punches far above its size. The Landing, Sip Sip, Rock House Restaurant, and Dunmore's restaurant are all excellent. The island's concentration of high quality dining in such a small footprint is remarkable.

Activities

Nassau offers everything. Golf at Albany or Baha Mar. Water parks at Atlantis. Spas at every major resort. Nightlife including casinos and clubs. Historical sites. Cultural venues. Shopping at the Bay Street area. Water sports at every beach. If you want variety, Nassau delivers.

Exuma is water focused. Swimming pigs at Big Major Cay (the signature Bahamas experience). Snorkeling Thunderball Grotto. Feeding nurse sharks at Compass Cay. Visiting Iguanas at Allen's Cay. Sandbar picnics. Bonefishing. Diving. Kayaking. Private boat charter is the common way to access all of this.

Harbour Island is about slow luxury. Beach time is the primary activity. Shopping along Bay Street. Dining. Spa services. Snorkeling. Boat charter to nearby cays. The activity set is smaller but the quality of the experience is high.

For a 5 night stay at premium accommodation for a couple:

Nassau: $1,500 to $4,000 per night at top resorts. Budget roughly $15,000 to $30,000 for accommodation plus dining, activities, and aviation.

Exuma: $1,500 to $3,000 per night at top resorts. Boat charter is an additional significant expense ($2,500 to $5,000 per day for quality private boats). Total trip cost similar to Nassau but with more spent on water experiences.

Flight Logistics

Nassau (MYNN): Most accessible. Direct from all South Florida airports in 45 to 60 minutes. Handles all aircraft types. Most frequent empty leg availability.

Exuma (MYEF): Direct from South Florida in 70 to 90 minutes. Handles midsize jets comfortably. Less frequent empty leg availability than Nassau.

Harbour Island (via MYEH): Direct from South Florida to North Eleuthera in about 70 minutes, then a taxi and water taxi to Harbour Island. Total door to hotel is about 90 to 100 minutes. Moderate empty leg availability.

The Multi Island Solution

Many experienced Bahamas travelers don't choose one. They combine destinations. A classic pattern is 2 or 3 nights on Harbour Island for the pink sand and boutique vibe, followed by 3 or 4 nights in Exuma for the adventure. Nassau gets skipped entirely or used as a quick stopover for a specific experience.
