FIREARMS
Firearms Into
The Bahamas & TCI.
The only legal path for a visitor firearm is a pre-issued Commissioner of Police permit. Ammunition is capped at 100 rounds per firearm. TCI is effectively closed.
At a Glance
- Bahamas: Commissioner of Police Firearm Import Permit required
- Ammunition limit: 100 rounds per firearm

The Bahamas permits visiting sport shooters and hunters to import firearms, but only with a pre-issued Firearm Import Permit from the Office of the Commissioner of Police. The process is real paperwork with real lead time. Undeclared firearms are confiscated and the carrier is arrested. A US concealed carry permit carries zero weight in the Bahamas.
Who Can Apply
Any adult visitor with a demonstrated lawful purpose: hunting (dove, duck, wild boar), sport shooting at a recognized Bahamian range or event, or competitive shooting. Purely recreational or "personal protection" applications are routinely refused. The firearm must be legally owned in the applicant’s country of origin.

Ammunition Limit
One hundred rounds per licensed firearm. For a dove hunt this is plenty for a 3 day weekend; for extended competition it is not. You cannot bring 500 rounds under a single permit. Excess ammunition is confiscated or held.
On Arrival
Declare on C7A
Check the firearms box on the Inward Passenger Declaration.
Present the permit
Hand the issued permit to Customs at the POE.
Firearm inspected and serial matched
Officer physically matches the firearm to the permit.
Sealed storage or accompanying
Depending on station and context, firearm may travel under seal to your range or accompany you with a note in the permit.
What Happens If You Do Not Declare
An undeclared firearm discovered in a bag is a felony offense in the Bahamas. The carrier is arrested, the firearm is confiscated, and a court appearance follows. There are US citizens serving multi-year sentences for undeclared single rounds of ammunition. The consequences are catastrophic compared to the upside. Always declare.
Turks and Caicos: Do Not Bring
TCI law on firearms is among the strictest in the Caribbean. Visiting civilians are effectively prohibited from bringing firearms, including ammunition, into TCI. A single round discovered in a checked bag has resulted in arrests and prison sentences for US citizens. There is no hunting exemption and no sport permit equivalent to the Bahamas.
If you normally carry and travel directly from the US, thoroughly search every bag for stray rounds before TCI travel. Even a 9mm casing will do it.
Returning to the US with a Firearm
On the return leg, US CBP will check that the firearm re-entering the US matches the firearm that was exported. The cleanest way to prove US origin is ATF Form 4457 (Certificate of Registration for Personal Effects Taken Abroad) filed before the outbound trip. Steps:
Visit a CBP office before travel
Bring the firearm, serial number on hand, photo ID.
Complete Form 4457
CBP officer stamps and returns it.
Carry the 4457 on the outbound and return
Present on return to prove US origin.
Without a 4457 CBP can still clear the firearm but may hold it briefly while verifying origin. 4457 makes the process instant.
Transporting on the Aircraft
On a private flight the firearm may travel in the cabin, in a locked case, unloaded and separated from its ammunition. The PIC will note it on paperwork. No TSA procedure applies because there is no TSA checkpoint. Ammunition is typically in its original manufacturer packaging.
Hunting Seasons in the Bahamas
Common seasons for visiting sport hunters (verify annually as dates shift):
- White-crowned pigeon: limited season, typically August to September
- Dove: October to December
- Duck: December to January
- Wild boar: generally year round on private land with landowner consent
Bag limits and season dates are published by the Bahamas Department of Marine Resources and Wildlife.
